Fantine smiles, and blushes, and looks determinedly at François. "That's very good of you," she says. "I understand why you would leave, then. And I wouldn't feel abandoned. But--I hope you do come back!" Perhaps she shouldn't have said that, but this sailing away idea sounds dangerous, deliberately so.
